Colonel Sargeant was born March
7, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Arthur Herbert Sargeant,
an accomplished engineer, and Frances Jessie Gibson Sargeant, a concert
pianist and music instructor. Arthur attended Michigan State University
where he was enrolled in the ROTC. During this time, Art met his first wife,
Margaret Wehr, a co-ed at Michigan State, and they married soon after. In early 1941, Lieutenant Sargeant was called to active duty. Art and his new bride found themselves stationed at various locations around the U. S., including Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, where Art famously gave the well-known actress Rosalind Russell a ride in a tank! In Palm Springs, Art was assigned to General George S. Patton’s Desert Training Corps, practicing desert warfare tactics. Art went on to accumulate a distinguished military record with the Sixth Armored Division. He was part of the Battle of the Bulge, as well as the invasion of Nazi Germany. In 1949 Art and Marge moved to Southern California where they raised three children: Bruce, Wendy, and Pamela. Colonel Sargeant retired from the Army Reserves with great honor at the age of 60. Divorced in 1964, Art met Eleanor Trickey Ford and the two wed in Long Beach in 1969. Art and Eleanor enjoyed traveling, especially to the annual reunions with Art’s old army buddies. Art and Eleanor were married for 33 years. |
